I’m the boss…

Well, only by default, and only for today and tomorrow. My boss the IT Director has taken the week off, leaving me and the other Tech at work to run the department (our Gap Student only works term time, and it’s half term holiday at the moment). But today and tomorrow, the other Tech’s off as well, leaving me to run the place on my own. Fortunately there are only about four other staff in the whole College for the rest of the week, which means there’s little-to-nothing for me to do! So, I’ve brought in my laptop, hooked it up to Colin’s (the other Tech) little PC sound system, and am blasting out some quality tracks to drown out the noise of the builders working in our department.

Currently listening to The Dj’s Got A Gun, by Robots in Disguise. I saw these girls live the a couple of weeks back at Club 85 in Hitchin, and they were spectacular! It was the first time I’d really been exposed to them except for a brief look at their MySpace page, and I only really went because a good friend of mine invited me to go with her, and she’s jetting off to Korea soon, so I wanted to spend some time with her before she vanishes. I have to admit, at the start of the night, I was very dubious. The crowd were pretty much all under eighteen, and looked like some of the Scenest kids I’ve ever seen. And the first band to play were… well, they were shite. Cool hair, nice idea, but badly executed.

Then Huski (www.huskimusic.com), the second support act (currently touring with the Robots) came on, and totally blew me away! I’ve never been a huge fan of Electro music, but this band almost single handedly changed my perception of the whole genre. You should check ‘em out. They’re ace.

And as for the Robots (www.robotsindisguise.co.uk)… well, they’re obviously both mental, but aside from that they’re both really hot, and make some insanely catchy music. They’re fast becoming one of my favourite bands! It’s ideal music to play when you’re getting ready for a big night out, or when you just want to dance like a bit of a ’special’ person! In fact, I like them so much that I’ve started a little musical project to make Electro music with my good friend Goon (I’d direct you to his blog, but he hates all this online frippery), which should be good, especially since he wants to live off the music we’re making… I’ll upload some when we record it, so you can all listen and revel in it’s glory. Or alternatively, tell me how shite it is.

Hmm, I think I’m damaging my neck – I’ve got the monitor for this desktop that I’m using to write this on my desk. Then to my right I’ve got my laptop with iTunes running, and further’round next to that, I’ve got a staff laptop that I’m supposed to be investigating (running slow, mysterious usage of memory and CPU – any clues?). Twisting ’round to look at the three of them is making me worry about my heading twisting right off my neck. Maybe I should just concentrate on my laptop then? Yeah, it’s for the best. I’m sure my boss wouldn’t want me injuring myself working on a staff laptop….

Oh, and even though it’s Valentines Day (I know, it’s a crass commercial scam to part us with more of our hard earned cash, but my GF would garrotte me if I didn’t celebrate it!), I don’t get to see my darlin’ Aimée until Saturday because everyone else in the department is off. Every silver lining has it’s cloud I suppose….
