As anyone that knows me will tell you, I was, am, and always will be an Indie Boy at heart. I cut my musical teeth on Oasis and Ocean Colour Scene, at the height of Britpop, back in the 90’s, when Cool Britannia was plastered across every newspaper front page, and the interior pages were filled with page after page of what the Gallagher brothers and their cool contemporaries were up to. So it’s only natural, that in spite of the way my musical tastes have diversified, I cherish my old Indie albums, and keep more than half an eye on the current Indie scene.
Hence the reason I’m so appalled at the latest tripe being pedalled by the Powers That Be in the music industry as ‘Indie’. The straw that broke the Camels back? Hearing Scouting For Girls playing live on Radio One this morning. How on Earth do those fellows have the nerve to get up on a stage, let alone a national radio station, nd play songs that could have been written by a 6-year old? Seriously people, this is Indie-by-Numbers (one of Goons favourite terms) at it’s worst! The song they played is called “She’s So Lovely”, and can you guess how the chorus goes? No? Well, I’ll give you a clue; It repeats the title of the song four times. That’s it. Just repeats that one inane phrase four times. The verse lyrics aren’t much better. I have nothing against simplistic lyrics, but these are just simple!
I’d be embarrassed to play that in a darkened room on my own. It’s moronic! Simple, bland, pointless rubbish, that appeals to simpletons, lemmings, and the ‘Indier Than Thou’ crowd who seem to believe that the music doesn’t matter as long as you look the part!
Grrrrrrr, things like this make me angry.
But on the plus side, the builders finished their work in my office this morning, so I now actually have the whole IT Suite to myself! The music has gone up, and the work rate has gone down… Primarily because I’m just counting off the hours before I leave and go to Cambridge to see my Aimée!
Anyway, must dash – It’s lunchtime!
PS: Don;t buy Scouting for Girls! Unless you’re ’simple’…
