My New Addiction

Apologies for the neglect over the past week ladies and gents, but there’s a new internet thingy that’s hogging all my online time at the moment (Well, that and heavy reading – more later). It’s this new-fangled Magellan Wars.

Basically the premise is you build a galactic empire, through resource/planet management, research and development of new technologies and ideas, the design and construction of starships, and good ol’ fashioned bombing-the-Hell-outta-people! Anyone that likes the idea of sitting at the head of their own intergalactic government, and dispatching fleets of uber-armed warships to defend your interests or explore the blackest regions of deep space, should definitely look into it. And if you do, join my Council (basically an alliance of different empires), the New Republic (#114 ). My user id is #263

Now, onto the other reason there’s been a hint of negligence towards my poor li’l blog – reading.

Just lately I’ve been on something of a literary binge, sparked off by discovering that a friend of mine who I’ve previously spoken to on a very casual basis, is actually a huge fan of the similar novels/Sci-fi as me! Not only that, but he’s more than willing to loan me books that I don’t have, or haven’t heard of. So recently In addition to my own ongoing reading (finishing Don Quixote for instance) I’ve also been devouring the books he’s loaned me!

The first new author he’s introduced me to is a chap named David Gemell I can’t say I’m exactly a champion of his work after the first novel of his I’ve read (Wolf in Shadow, one of the Jon Shannow series) like I was after the first Dan Abnett novel, but it’s still good. It’s got an almost simple writing style to it. Seemed very modular. Not a bad thing for a light reader, but for someone that Loves Tolstoy and Anne Rice, it seemed a little too simple. Good storyline though, and some excellent twists and plot hooks in there – I’d recommend it if post apocalyptic sci-fantasy is your thing.

Also, I’m reading a Star Wars novel at the moment, mainly in my lunch breaks at work. It’s the first book from the Legacy of the Force series, set some forty years after the events of A New hope (referred to in universe as 40 ABY – After Battle of Yavin), and deals with the New Jedi Order, the Galactic Alliance, and the trials and tribulations they face in the latest crisis to plague the well known literary universe. What’s prompted me to read this one (in the past I’ve resisted reading novels further ahead in the timeline than I’ve read so far – and at the moment, I’m mid-way through the X-Wing series, 5 ABY!), is that it was given away free! Yes, that’s right. It was available for download as a PDF, or an e-book for free, to promote the series in the weeks before the final book in the series was released. So now all I have to do is wait for them to release the other eight books in the series for free, and I’ll be well away….!
